FERRARA AND ITS MARVELLOUS CASTLE

FERRARA: In 1358, a dangerous revolt persuaded Niccolò II d'Este of the need to provide himself and his family with mighty defences: the result was the construction of the Castle of San Michele, a fortress erected against the populace. The massive, imposing structure, and the moat, drawbridges and towers all date back to that time.
A covered passageway, which still exists today, connected the military building to the palazzo of the marquis (the present-day Town Hall building). The centuries went by, and the danger of popular revolts abated. The Castle of Ferrara then became a magnificent courtly residence, and was embellished with Venetian roof terraces atop the towers, marble balconies, a 16th century style courtyard (at the time entirely decorated with frescoes) and lavish apartments.
